The Violet Handicap is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually during the second week of October at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Inaugurated in 1977, the current Grade III event is open to fillies and mares age three and older and is raced on turf over a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs). Thoroughbred horse racing is a worldwide sport and industry involving the racing of Thoroughbred horses. It is governed by different national bodies. There are two forms of the sport: Flat racing and National Hunt racing. National Hunt racing can be further divided into hurdling and steeplechasing.
